SLEEP and FOOD and why they are best friends

Sleep is so important for us to function at out optimum every day but very rarely do we ever seem to get the required 8 hours sleep a night. Either from not having enough hours in the day or finding it too hard to shut your mind down after a long day.

There are some foods that can help you get to sleep and help you sleep more soundly for longer. Food…. Sleep?!? Music to your ears right!! AND no I’m not talking about the food coma type where you have eatin so much food at lunch that you need a lie down. Ha!!

Magnesium and melatonin are known sleep aids so I recommend you try adding some of these snack foods to your diet. I’d also recommend eating at least 2 hours before you go to bed as eating too close your bed time can cause digestive issues such as acid reflux.  And i think we can agree that acid reflux is certainly not an ideal sleep aid. 😉

Here are some simple snack foods that will help aid you sleep.

Try eating a handful of almonds after your meal at night. Almonds have both magnesium and the sleep regulating hormone melatonin which will aid in your sleep.

Kiwi fruit.
Kiwi fruits have a lot of nutritional value from giving you a big boost of vitamin C, helping your digestive health, reducing inflammation and lowering your cholesterol.
They also contain serotonin, a brain chemical that helps regulate your sleep. Try a kiwi fruit at night and see if that helps you sleep more soundly. Zzzzzzz

Chamomile tea.
There’s been a lot of research about the benefits of chamomile tea from boosting your immunity to improving skin health but one of the other main benefits is improving sleep quality and reducing insomnia. Try a cup of chamomile tea before bed and see if you sleep more soundly.

People have been saying for years that turkey makes you tired (which come to think of it) might be one of the reasons why we all nap after Xmas lunch.
Turkey contains the amino acid tryptophan which increases the production of the sleep regulating hormone melatonin.
Turkey is also a good source of protein and one of the leaner meats to eat. Bring on the Turkey I say!!!

So if you’re having trouble getting to sleep or sleeping soundly through the night then add any of these snack foods or the chamomile tea to your nightly routine and see if you can get more zzzzz’s throughout the night.

Sleep tight!
